M22520 – Crimping tools, Locators & Custom Tool cases

MIL-DTL-22520 ( also known as M22520)  is now superseded by the SAE-AS22520.

This specification covers the general requirements for crimping tools, accessories and inspection gages used for connecting removable contacts,coaxial connectors, ferrules, terminals, end caps and splices to wire conductors for use with electric connectors, terminal junction systems, and other electric components.

First of all, crimping process is now the only process authorized for aircraft harnesses to attach a terminal or a contact end to an electrical conductor.

Crimping process is the method of  attaching a terminal or contact end to an electrical conductor by pressure forming a metal barrel together with the conductor.

Correct crimping in accordance with the Aircraft manufacturers requirements depends on the correct combination of conductor, crimp barrel and tool.

When applied with the suitable tool, a perfect connection is established which has both good electrical and mechanical characteristics.

That is why most of the aircraft applications are using standard M22520 which define the crimping tool as well as the locator or positionner.

Locator ( also known as “positionner”) or turret is an accessory designed to be attached to a crimping tool.

CRIMPING TOOLS

Generally, aviation uses 4 Tools with the following characteristics :

M22520/1-01 is specifed for wire gauge 12 through 26 AWG .Over a thousand turret heads are available to adapt to the crimping tool.

Crimp depth is controlled by an 8 position selector knob located on the tool. Choice of the position depends on the cable used ( refer to appropriate M22520 specifications)

M22520/2-01 is specified for smaller wire gauge 20 through 32.

A large choice of positionners, depending on the connector and cable used, is also available to adapt to the crimping tool.

M22520/5-01 is mainly used for coaxial, triaxial and quadrax contacts and connectors.Your maintenance center just need one tool and a die set in order to accomodate most of the contacts previously mentioned.

M22520/23-01 is a pneumatic crimp tool widely used to ease crimping of power contacts and connectors.This heavy duty crimp tool accommodates large size contacts 8 through 0000 AWG.

This tool is portable and needs no extra booster for large size contacts. The standard die assembly and positioners are easily interchangeable with no special tool required. Air Cost Control used to provide QPL-M22520 tools and accessories to customers
